FAQ's

What can an Osteopath treat?

Answer:

Osteopaths are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions — anything that affects how your body moves and functions. Treatment can help with issues such as back and neck pain, joint stiffness, muscle tension, postural strain, and sports injuries, as well as headaches, sciatica, and repetitive strain problems.

Osteopathy focuses on finding the root cause of pain or dysfunction rather than just addressing the symptoms. By using hands-on techniques, movement advice, and personalised exercise plans, osteopaths aim to restore mobility, improve function, and support long-term recovery.

What's the difference between Osteopaths and Physiotherapy?

Answer:

Both osteopaths and physiotherapists treat musculoskeletal pain and movement issues, but they differ slightly in their approach and areas of focus.

Osteopaths take a whole-body approach to diagnosis and treatment. They look at how the skeleton, muscles, nerves, and circulation work together, using hands-on techniques such as soft tissue work, joint mobilisation, manipulation, and stretching to restore balance and function. Treatment often includes advice on movement, exercise, and lifestyle to support recovery and prevent recurrence.

Physiotherapists are more commonly based in hospital or rehabilitation settings and tend to focus on post-surgical rehabilitation, recovery after injury, or restoring movement following illness. Physiotherapy often includes structured exercise programmes, manual therapy, and the use of modalities such as ultrasound, taping, or electrotherapy to support healing and improve strength and mobility.

In practice, there’s a lot of overlap — both aim to reduce pain, improve mobility, and support long-term health. The best choice often depends on your specific needs, preferences, and the practitioner’s experience.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Answer:

We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely. For most treatments, it’s helpful if your practitioner can easily access the area being assessed — for example, shorts for lower limb issues or a vest top for upper back, shoulder, or neck concerns.

You may be asked to remove certain layers so your practitioner can assess posture, movement, or muscle function accurately, but your comfort and privacy are always our top priority. You will only ever be asked to remove what is necessary for your treatment, and care is always taken to ensure you feel at ease throughout your appointment.

If you’re attending for a massage, please wear (or bring) suitable undergarments — your therapist will ensure you remain covered and comfortable at all times.

Do I need a GP referral to see an osteopath?

Answer:

No, you don’t need a GP referral — you can book directly with the clinic. Osteopaths are primary healthcare practitioners, which means you can self-refer and make an appointment whenever you feel you need support.

If you have any relevant medical history, such as recent X-rays, MRI scans, or specialist reports, it’s helpful to bring these along to your appointment. This information can provide useful context and help your osteopath tailor the assessment and treatment plan to your specific needs.

How many sessions will I need?

Answer:

The number of sessions you’ll need depends on your individual condition, overall health, and how your body responds to treatment. Some patients notice improvement after just one or two sessions, while others benefit from a short course of treatment to achieve longer-term results.

Your practitioner will discuss a personalised treatment plan with you during your first appointment, outlining what to expect and how many sessions may be recommended. The focus is always on helping you recover as efficiently as possible and supporting you in maintaining your progress between visits.

Is the clinic accessible for people with limited mobility?

Answer:

Yes — our clinic has been purpose-built with accessibility in mind. We have a lift, accessible toilets, and treatment rooms designed to comfortably accommodate patients with limited mobility.

We operate an intercom entry system, so if you use a wheelchair or require step-free access, please let us know before your appointment. This allows us to make sure a member of our team is ready to welcome you through the accessible entrance and assist you safely into the clinic.
